Riley Street House
Robert Plumb Build has worked with Akin Atelier over a number of different project types; new builds both urban and rural, interior architecture at RPB’s commercial office space and with Riley Street House the re-imagining of a traditional terrace in Sydney’s Surry Hills. The original house had already been subject to some quirky modifications and so the architects inherited a non-conventional layout with some whimsical level changes that they were able to lean into. Through clever spatial planning and the introduction of skylights, moments of light are amplified within the overall moody palette of spotted gum, concrete and tiles. Referencing the David Chipperfield timber staircase in his West Village townhouse the design at Riley Street weaves from the ground floor to the attic. Evolving the learnings from the staircase at the Rochester Street Office this design was complex and hence a challenge for RPB, working with Cranbrook Workshop, to execute something both sculptural and significant. “This key design element was achieved through the collective, positive momentum that defined much of this project,’ said Kelvin Ho, director, Akin Atelier.
